The Future Is 20 Years Younger Than Us, And It’s Brilliantly Humbling

The future of work is here - fast, immersive, and surprisingly normal to the next generation. How do mid-career professionals stay relevant and confident?

The future of work isn’t “coming.” I met it on Friday. It was wearing a VR headset.

I spent the morning at Coventry University where students showcased the results of a 12-week cybersecurity project - VR, AR, and immersive tech bringing live cyber scenarios to life for businesses.

These students don’t see cyber, AI, or emerging tech as intimidating. They see it as:

• A tool

• A language

• A constant

• Normal

Meanwhile, many mid-career professionals I coach feel the opposite:

• Unsure how to keep up

• Worried their skills are “aging out”

• Torn between performance and relevance

• Wondering how to lead in a world moving this fast

The takeaway? We don’t need to become VR experts - but we do need to stay curious, connected, and confident.
